What are moles?
Moles are small mammals that feed on earthworms, grubs, and other insects. They are yard pests that live most of their lives underground in the soil and rarely ever come into contact with people. Though many people believe they are a type of rodent, they are not; they are insectivores. Moles have stocky bodies covered in dark brown, velvety fur, and their large front feet and rounded claws help them dig through the soil where they live. Moles have ears, but no external openings. You can also identify them by their very short and almost hairless tail, pointed snout, and small eyes, which provide them with very poor vision.
Are moles dangerous?
Moles pose no direct danger to people, but they are still dangerous pests because of the damage they cause to our properties. The intricate underground tunnels they create while hunting for food leaves raised trails of dirt above the ground that is not only unsightly, but makes mowing a difficult task, and creates trip and fall hazards. Additionally, as they tunnel through the soil, they damage the roots of grass, shrubs, bushes, flowers, and bulbs, which may result in the death of plants.
Why do I have a mole problem?
The biggest issue with mole infestations is that they are attracted to yards with the healthiest lawns. Yards with loose, moist soil make it easy for them to dig. Property owners who are next to open fields, parks, farmlands, wooded areas, and golf courses are more likely to experience problems with moles than those in more urban areas.
Where will I find moles?
Moles live and breed outside, and they aren’t pests you’ll find indoors. They spend their lives in the soil, creating tunnels that they live in and use to travel through while foraging for food. Some of these tunnels are just below the surface of the ground; these are the tunnels they use to hunt. Moles are challenging pests to deal with because they are active year-round and cause extensive damage to the yards they've invaded. On residential properties, moles tunnel though lawns, flower beds, and around garden areas.
